AeroUp: Revitalising wind farm performance

AeroUp digital solution

Renewable deployment is continuing around the world, with the number of solar panels and wind turbines rapidly increasing. Last year, the EU built a record 17 GW of new wind energy. On top of this, in the first half of 2023, there was the highest number of turbines installed worldwide – a 50% increase from the year before. Globally, the current intake of wind power now sits at 69.5GW.

But despite the impressive number of new assets, many of the world’s turbines aren’t new. In fact, many first-generation turbines are now approaching their operational shelf life of 25-30 years.

This is an issue, not just because of the maintenance challenges associated with ageing infrastructure, but also because ageing assets often perform sub-optimally. At the same time, it can often be difficult for asset owners to know just how well their assets are performing.

Fortunately, there is ample opportunity for owners to improve the performance of their assets. With the right tools, asset owners can maximise the output and extend the life of their turbines.

Optimising turbine performance

When faced with ageing turbines, owners, clients, investors, developers, and landowners should remember that improving the performance of existing assets can often be more financially viable and offer quicker return on investment than simply producing and installing new ones.

By upgrading assets with the latest materials, improved components, or advanced control systems, you can increase asset efficiency without the high initial price of new installations.

Manufacturing and installing new wind turbines comes at a cost – but by improving the performance of existing turbines, you can reduce the overall impact associated with wind energy production.

Cue AeroUp

AeroUp is an enhancement product from RES. Using technologies inspired by those found in modern race cars and aircraft, AeroUp can boost energy yields by up to 5% and increase a farm’s net asset value.

Our approach is bespoke. Through collaborating with turbine suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and service providers, we provide the hardware and software solutions – as well as the expertise — to best enhance your turbine’s aerodynamics.

Particularly beneficial for those with out-of-warranty turbines, AeroUp maximises the value of ageing assets. And when combined with software enhancements from TuneUp – our digital package – we can increase your energy uplift even further.

In the current climate, maximising the performance of existing assets is vitally important. With AeroUp from RES, owners can improve their turbine’s performance and maximise their farm’s potential – whatever the age of their assets.
