RES develops large-scale solar farm in southern Sweden

RES, the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, has been given the green light to develop a large-scale solar park in Falköping, in the south of Sweden. The park is expected to produce 13.5 million kilowatt-hours per year which is enough electricity to power 700 homes.

With an area of 20 hectares, this facility will be a significant producer of renewable energy, helping to reduce the region’s dependence on fossil fuels and thus also reducing its carbon dioxide emissions.

“It’s an important project in many ways. Firstly, because we need more solar power in our energy mix, but also because together with landowners, we are looking at ways to preserve and enhance biodiversity around the park,” says Lisa Janmar, project developer at RES.

Geotechnical investigations were conducted during the winter months, followed by biodiversity assessments. The application for changes to the natural environment from the County Administrative Board has been approved, and now an archaeological survey remains before the actual project planning begins.

“The vision for this solar park is very exciting. We have a good dialogue with the landowners who, like us, are very invested in biodiversity. Together, we are now exploring various options to increase biological diversity around and within the park. For example, we are considering making it a combined site for solar power and grazing landscapes,” says Lisa Janmar.

Historically, the land has been used as meadows for hay production and pasture, but for the past 60 years, the area has been planted with spruce forest.

“At RES, it is part of our approach to investigate the additional values we can create around our projects. In this case, we are looking at the possibilities of studying the area in different phases and examining how we can develop the land,” says Lisa Janmar.

We are working towards enabling the business sector and environmental protection to go hand in hand, and this project is a concrete example of that,” Lisa Janmar concludes.

Construction of the solar power park is expected to begin in 2025, and once operational, it will be able to supply hundreds of households with green energy while serving as a living example of how renewable energy and nature conservation can coexist for the benefit of both people, animals, and the environment.
